Pupil Council

At Elmvale Primary and Nursery Class children have an important part to play in making decisions about the life and work of the school. One of the ways in which children can have their say and make sure that their views and ideas are listened to is through the Pupil Council. Representatives from each class from Nursery to P7 will form the Pupil Council and we will meet regularly to talk about important issues and projects. Each representative can put forward class views at the Pupil Council meetings and it also gives children the chance to tell the teachers and staff their ideas. Part of the Pupil Council’s remit is to help improve learning and attainment in school.

Our new Pupil Council members were introduced to the school and wider community at our Harvest Celebration at Springburn Parish Church. Their photographs will be displayed shortly in the main corridor outside the assembly hall.

The Pupil Council will meet in the ICT suite on a Friday and the agenda of the meeting will be up to the children. Before each Pupil Council meeting each class will hold a Class Council meeting where they can put forward ideas/topics for the Class Representatives to bring to the meeting. At their first meeting the group will elect a Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson and a Secretary. We are looking forward to hearing who will take up these new roles.

During our meetings important issues will be discussed, ideas shared and action plans made. Everyone will have an equal opportunity to talk and be listened to and it will be the chairperson's job to make sure the members of the pupil council show respect for each other. After the meetings, representatives will report back to their classes about the issues that have been discussed.

The Pupil Council will have a list of rules clearly setting out roles and responsibilities, a chairperson who leads the meetings, a vice-chair to support them, a secretary who takes notes of what is said at the meeting and link teachers who will give guidance and support.

The Pupil Council involves children in decisions that affect themselves, their class and their school and also helps them to gain confidence to voice their ideas and opinions. It also gives children responsibilities, which encourage them to become active citizens.

A Pupil Council Improvements book will be provided so suggestions can be left by anyone for discussion by the council. These will be shared every Monday at our whole school assembly during the 'open mic' session.

Every member of our school is important. Every opinion and voice counts. We are looking forward to a busy and productive year.
